As fans await the arrival of Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters, even more potential villains are being teased for the new film.
"Poignant" and "Sad" Moments Between Peter & Gwen Revealed?
Director Marc Webb tweeted a perplexing clue Feb. 3 about the potential of another villainous character making an appearance in Spider-Man 2 by referring to a desire to shoot the movie in black and white.
"Almost shot ASM2 in B+W til @bjnovak's (A. Smythe) promo for his excellent book ONE MORE THING beat me to it," Webb wrote alongside a video clip of the promo.
Though the tweet seems to be innocently promoting B.J. Novak's book, fans of the comic book series picked up on Webb also referring to the author/actor as A. Smythe.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Novak's role in the film had previously remained unannounced, though he was confirmed to be appearing in it.
Webb's tweet alluded to Novak playing Alistair Smythe, the paralyzed son of Spider-Slayer creator Spencer Smythe, who eventually turned his son into the Ultimate Spider-Slayer
Since the tweet, Novak's IMDB page has updated and confirmed that this is the role Novak is scheduled to play.
The character's presence in the film sets up yet another hint at potential villains in a film which has teased several different ones for months.
The Daily Bugle Tumblr page, which is an official spoiler site run by Sony Pictures for the film, has teased the potential for several villains in the past, including Miles Warren (The Jackal), The Vulture, and Spencer Smythe himself.
The film's official trailer also teased the potential for other future villains by showing a brief glimpse of a scene where a mysterious figure walks through an underground tunnel at Oscorp, passing one set of enclosed wings as well as some octopus arms, which indicated the appearance of The Vulture and Dr. Octopus.
The trailer also featured a brief scene which showed six doors all raising on once, which teases the potential for the Sinister Six.
The only villains who have been confirmed to appear in Spider-Man 2 thus far are The Green Goblin, Electro and The Rhino.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theaters May 2.
