The Doctor's wife has seen multiple regenerations of her husband, but will River Song get a chance to meet Peter Capaldi's iteration of the Time Lord?

How Much Will 'Doctor Who' Change With Peter Capaldi At The Helm? New Rebel Time Lord, Old Feel

First introduced alongside David Tennant's Tenth Doctor in "Silence in the Library," River Song (Alex Kingston) has been with viewers since season 4. The daughter of Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) has led both a traumatic and heroic life, and viewers have been with her from birth to death (although not in that order).

When River appeared in the season 7 finale, "The Name of the Doctor," she had the chance to properly say goodbye to the Doctor. Despite the seeming finality of this statement, the two separated with a promise that their paths will cross once more. Due to the open-ended nature of their last meeting, fans are now wondering if showrunner Steven Moffat will bring back the archeologist for season 8.

'Doctor Who' To Return To Pompeii? Is Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Iteration Really Set To Revisit The Volcanic Site?

"I'm slightly tempted, because I imagine Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston would be absolutely hilarious together," Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine. "She could certainly have met other Doctors. So there's nothing stopping us ... But is there anything new we can do? Or is the new thing that Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston would be very sexy together? Is that enough? We've always had fun with the fact that they don't look like a couple."

While Moffat mulls over his choices, fans can pursue the gallery above to relive some of River's latest appearances. Click the video below to see River meet the Tenth Doctor.

Doctor Who is expected to return to BBC and BBC America this fall.
