The former American Idol winner released a new single on iTunes last Monday called Raging Fire, which he will debut on Thursday night's episode.
Phillips recently spoke with Billboard about his new single and how well it's been doing. He, Todd Clark, Derek Fuhrmann and Gregg Wattenberg finished writing the song about a week before it was released.
Season 13 Had Lowest Premiere Ratings?
"We sent it to the label-- we already had a few other singles, but we sent them that one, and they were really excited and wanted to put it out [immediately]," Phillips said. "It's a love song, but it's also a little heavier too. It's got a little bit of an edgier side to it, and I really like that."
Phillips appears to be in love with the song, but when he goes back to American Idol, he seems certain that his nerves are going to kick in, leaving him less optimistic.
"I like seeing all the people that I got to know...it's cool to see all those faces," the singer said. "But it's also weird for me to get back up onstage and sing because I hate live television, and I'm going to be scared to death when I get up there. It's always a little nerve-wracking."
Phillips' other hits include Volcano, We've Got Tonight and Man on the Moon. He won American Idol in 2012.
American Idol airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
