It's not very often that an electronic DJ steps out of his or her comfort zone and experiments with different sounds. Yet, for Vaski, that was one of his main goals for his newly released EP, The Explorer. The six-song collection is a refreshing addition to the electronic music scene.

"I'm always trying to make the weirdest, newest sound that I can and put it in my songs," Vaski, 23, told Enstars. "I think that some other artists aren't as attuned to that."

The Minneapolis, Minn. native, whose real name is Alex Brouwer, worked on his new music for over a year and unlike his previous four EPs, he didn't stay confined to the genre of dubstep. The Explorer, released under SMOG Records, features electro house and glitch hop as well as vocals from singer Betty Borderline on Game of Cards.

While Can't Bring Me Down has become the best-selling single from the EP, Vaski's personal favorite is The Nile. The track marks the first time he used a speed of 90 beats per minute, or BPM, instead of his usual 140.

"I haven't really made anything like it before," he said of the song. "It came from a different place."

Vaski, who began arranging music at the age of 12, also explained that his distinct sound has been influenced by his love for rock music. He noted that the Arctic Monkeys is his favorite band.

"They aren't anything like what I make," he said before adding that he'd collaborate with the British band "in a heartbeat."

Since releasing his first EP in 2009, the producer has toured North America, Australia, New Zealand as well as parts of Europe and he plans to hit the road again this fall. He's also busy working on his next EP, which he said will be released soon.

"The hardest thing in today's world is you have to walk a really thin line. You don't want to sound like everybody else and you don't want to sound completely left field," he said. "You have to walk that line of being current but also being unique." And, those are two qualities Vaski mastered with The Explorer.

Fun fact about Vaski:

While some might assume his stage name is a toast to the Finnish island, Vaski said it's simply a coincidence. The DJ derived the unique name after he put his favorite letters into an online word generator.

"I knew I had to have something that when you Google it, I was the only thing that came up," he said. Well, only him and the European island. "I should probably go there someday just to check it out," he joked.
