'Supernatural' Season 9 Spoilers: What To Expect From 'Bloodlines'; 'Serialized Soap' Format & Female Leads [VIDEO]
Supernatural is branching out and the CW series will introduce its new spin-off series during episode 20, "Bloodlines."

Set in Chicago, the upcoming backdoor pilot centers on a brand-new hunter named Ennis Roth (Lucien Laviscount). Thrown into world of the supernatural following a family tragedy, the 20-something will get a crash course in hunting from Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) before being left to deal with five paranormal families that run the Windy City's underworld.
Although the Winchester brothers will be making an appearance in the first episode of Supernatural: Bloodlines, they will not be series regulars, nor will the new storyline take on the road warrior mantel of its predecessor.

"Fans can expect the mother ship's humor, horror and pathos, but the new show would be less procedural and lean toward serialized soaps with storylines about intra- and inter-family dynamics," explained Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver, according to TV Guide Magazine.
One striking difference between the two series will be Bloodlines inclusion of several female leads. While Supernatural has featured many important female characters, the main focus has always been on the brothers.
"There will be some prominent female characters, of all different stripes," Carver told TV Guide Magazine.
These characters will include the werewolf Violet Durant (Melissa Roxbugh) and a female shapeshifter.
"Bloodlines" will air on April 29 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW. Click the video below to see a preview for Supernatural's next episode, "Alex Annie Alexis Ann."
