Doctor Who's title character is undoubtedly a Time Lord, but is he also part human?

The oft-asked question stems from a line in the Eighth Doctor's (Paul McGann) 1996 TV movie, a line that has not yet been explored in the New Who series.

"[I'm] half-human, on my mother's side," the Doctor quipped in the Matthew Jacobs penned film (see video below).

Will Matt Smith Crossover From 'Doctor Who' To 'Sherlock'?

Despite the fact that the BBC has not fully embraced this statement, former Who showrunner Russell T. Davies emphasizes that this statement should not be forgotten.

"I don't like the half-human thing. He certainly isn't half-human, but it's less interesting to say it simply doesn't count," Davies explained on Who's Round (via Doctor Who TV).

Davies considered referencing McGann's assertion during the four seasons he helmed the new series, but he later thought better of it.

"I always wanted to put in a line where someone says to the Doctor ‘are you human?' and the Doctor says ‘no, but I was once in 1999. It was a 24 hour bunk,'" Davies continued. "Part of the reason I never put that in was it was a bit too self-referential but also I thought I'm spoiling the TV movie if I do that. In that time, like it or not, the Doctor was half human. Everything in that story says he was half human, so you can't not count it. I don't think we can ignore it."

However, if fans do want to see a truly part-human Doctor, they can check out Meta-Crisis Ten (David Tennant) in "Journey's End."
