Introduced during a CSI backdoor pilot on April 30, Cyber was officially picked up by CBS on Friday, according to Deadline.
Produced by Carol Mendelsohn, Anthony Zuiker and Ann Donahue, Cyber will bring a new twist to the CSI family as it departs from the traditional forensic work fans have become so accustomed to. Instead, the new series has made its headquarters at the FBI and places a focus on the ever-growing world of internet-based crimes.
Lays Framework For 'CSI: Cyber' In 'Kitty', Meet Patricia Arquette's Character In 3 Sneak Peeks
"You can't pick up The New York Times right now without seeing an article on cybercrime," Zuiker explained to TV Guide. "It's pretty frightening and hard to believe what people can pull off nowadays, but it's nothing compared to what our world will be dealing with in five years. What will extortion and bank heists be like in the future? What will hit men be like? Crime will be amplified in ways we can't imagine."
Headlining the series will be Patricia Arquette who will take on the role of Avery Ryan, Special Agent in Charge for the FBI's cyber crime unit (see video below). The rest of the cast has yet to be announced.
CSI: Cyber is expected to air in the late 2014.
