Katie Holmes' lawyer said her divorce from Tom Cruise was a personal and private matter but sources close to the couple have spoken up and say Scientology and Cruise's controlling ways were big reasons, according to media reports.

On Friday, the couple announced that they were breaking up. "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," said Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest", he said in a statement to People magazine.

Tom's rep said in a statement: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

Sources connected to the actress say Holmes filed for divorce over Cruise's controlling ways. Tom always made the decisions in their relationship and after five years she felt she was turning into a robot, according to Radaronline.com

"Tom has always made all the decisions in their relationship and called all the shots and initially Katie found it charming," Radaronline.com reports, citing the source.

"After five years of this Katie really felt like she was going crazy and that she was actually turning into the robot that the press had always made her out to be. Katie has actually got a great personality and she used to be spunky and feisty. She changed so much when she was with Tom, she became downtrodden and insipid.

"In the end it just got too much, she was sick of it and decided she had to do something. Basically, she grew up and lost the starstruck goggles she had been wearing," the source told Radaronline.com

Cruise also wanted to make decisions for their 6-year-old daughter Suri related to Scientology, and Holmes reportedly has never been fully committed to that religion.

"Sources familiar with the split tell us Katie is filing for sole legal custody ...specifically because she does not want Tom to control decisions relating to religion," TMZ reports.

The fact that Holmes is seeking sole legal custody of Suri, may support those reports.

Other media reports say Holmes' career sunk during her marriage to Cruise. Since her starring role in "Batman Begins" in 2005, the biggest role she landed was as Jackie Kennedy in the TV miniseries "The Kennedys" that were cancelled. She made a guest appearance in the TV show "How I Met Your Mother" last year and starred in Adam Sandler's "Jack and Jill."

People may never know what went wrong with one of Hollywood's highest profile marriages but if Holmes goes ahead and writes the memoir she once said she wanted to write, people will know the truth.
