Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Divorce Caused by Scientology?
Rumors have been growing that Tom's ties to Scientology may have be a factor in the couples divorce. Katie Holmes announced that she has filed for divorce citing 'Irreconcilable differences' and requested 'primary residential custody' for the couples 6 year-old daughter Suri.
Katie's lawyer Jonathan Wolfe released a statement saying the divorce is a "personal and private matter" and that Katie's "primary concern remains, as it has always been, her daughter's best interest."
Tom is currently out of the country, filming his latest movie "Oblivion" in Iceland but his publicist released a statement:
"Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out."
It seems Tom was taken by surprise by the recent announcement. Just last month the 49 year-old actor talked with Playboy magazine about his love for Katie Holmes "I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."
However, rumors have been growing that one of the main factors for the couples divorce maybe Tom's Scientology religion.
Holmes, converted to Scientology in 2005 before marrying Cruise, but she hasn't been seen in a Scientology Church for a while, according to reports.
Cruise on the other hand, has made controversial statements about his membership in the Church of Scientology, "I know we have an opportunity to really help and effectively change people's lives," he said in a 2008 video interview. "I'm absolutely uncompromisingly dedicated to that."
TMZ reported that Tom wanted to make decisions for Suri's education related to Scientology. According to the NY Dailynews Katie enrolled Suri in a Catholic pre-school in 2009.
Holmes has requested 'primary residential custody' for the couples' 6 year-old daughter with 'suitable amount' for child support.
This will be Katie's first divorce and Tom's third divorce. He was previously married to Nicole Kidman and Mimi Rogers.
