'The Hobbit Part 3' News: Smaug Up Against 'Godzilla' In Dragon Wars? [VIDEO]
After The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's wily dragon gave audiences quite the scare, Godzilla seems to have stepped into the competition and in a recent showdown a winner was declared.
The Wall Street Journal pitted the two dragons against each other in a pretty detailed analysis, which took everything from strength to intelligence and destructability to manipulativeness into consideration.
But seems like despite the brilliant portrayal of the dragon Smaug by Benedict Cumberbatch, the anatagonist of the hobbits can't pass muster in front of the indomitable Godzilla, according to the publication.
Here's an excerpt from the reasoning given for Godzilla's win:
"Between Smaug and Godzilla, there's no contest. ... Godzilla gets nuked and only grows stronger from it. He is impervious to any forces that oppose him, and has made short work of many monsters, which were much larger and more powerful than Smaug. ... I have to put my money on Godzilla every time."
"Bard's Storyline" Revealed? Battle of Five Armies to Be Shorter than First Two Films in Trilogy?
Cumberbatch not only voiced the fictional dragon in the The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug, but tried to embody the character as well.
The actor told Vulture that he asked director Peter Jackson if he could be involved in motion-capture, where he could simulate the dragon's movements during filming and have it mimicked on screen rather than merely providing a voice-over for the deadly creature.
The final part of the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, will release on December 18.
