The Blacklist's Liz Keen leads a life full of mystery, but no question is quite as complicated or as pressing as the riddle of her birth father's identity and ultimate fate.

Can Red's Version Of The Truth Be Trusted On 'The Blacklist'? Series Creator Dishes On Liz's Past, Berlin's Grief

As NBC wrapped up the hit drama's freshman season, Liz's journey into the past became slightly more complicated when a (possibly) dying Tom (Ryan Eggold) informed her that her father is actually still alive. Despite Red's (James Spader) ardent insistence that her father perished in the fire that almost claimed Liz's life, the FBI profiler will be giving Tom's last confession its due diligence in season 2.

Now Liz just needs to determine who is lying - her duplicitous husband or the manipulative master criminal?

Who Is Number One On Red's 'Blacklist'? When Will The Top Criminal Be Revealed?

"What I do not believe is that Red is lying to Liz," explained series creator Jon Bokenkamp, according to TV Guide. "The things he's told her about her father he believes to be true and thus are true, but that doesn't necessarily mean those in the writers' room believe them to be true. It's safe to believe that what he told her on the steps was the truth so far as he knows."

However, the newly revealed burn scars on Red's back indicate that he may have been at the scene that fateful, fiery night.

"It's safe to say that he is connected to her past in some deeply emotional way. Either that, or maybe he was a firefighter in another life," Bokenkamp joked, according to TV Guide. "They both have an understanding of [the mythology between them], but don't really have the whole picture."

While Bokenkamp tiptoes around the enigmatic truth, Liz decided at the end of "Berlin: Conclusion" that she needed to confront her past, and viewers will get to see her dig deeper into her early years when The Blacklist returns next Fall.
