Supernatural kicked off the summer hell-atus with one devil of a cliffhanger.

Cain To Return On 'Supernatural'? Will Tim Omundson Help Remove Dean's Mark?

In the wake of "Do You Believe in Miracles," Supernatural has proved - undeniably - that it has a very warped view of what a miracle actually entails.

While Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) spent a good portion of the episode performing life-saving feats to gain the adoration of humanity, the only miracle that truly mattered was the one that helped to bring Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) back to the land of the living - sort of.

Misha Collins Returning For 'Supernatural' Season 10, Will He Retain His Waning Grace?

More like the land of the demonic.

The elder Winchester brother had railed against becoming one of hell's minions during season 3, but his Mark of Cain combined with Crowley's (Mark Sheppard) ingenuity has allowed Dean to hold onto some form of life. Or at least that's what his terrifying new black eyes appear to indicate.

If fans thought they were taken by surprise by the finale's ending, Ackles was at least equally shocked, if not more so, when he read the script.

"I know what my reaction was when I got to the end of the page and my mouth was open," Ackles told E!. "I will say that this cliffhanger surprised me more than most."

Will Team Free Will manage to save Dean, or will his demonic condition be permanent? Tell us what you think in the poll below!

Supernatural airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
