Mad Men viewers were surprised to see Bob Benson return to the series Sunday; but what was even more shocking was his proposal to Joan.

Actor James Wolk opened up to GQ about his sly and sneaky character's return Wednesday.

"I knew a couple weeks prior to that that they were planning some sort of Bob Benson appearance, and I wasn't quite sure for how long or how many episodes or what the plot would be. And I was also in the midst of shooting The Crazy Ones. So there was a lot to figure out, but I knew it was coming."

Don Contacts 'An Old Friend'?

While Bob works to be a little less cunning at Sterling Cooper & Partners, he's still all about career advancement. This is why he probably popped the question to Joan despite it also becoming clear in this episode, called The Strategy, that he is homosexual.

"I think he really has a love for Joan and for her family. I think he really does care for her. And as you see throughout the show, he's always thinking about trying to advance himself. So I believe that he feels that having a wife and having a family, and being a picture perfect American man in the 1960s, will help him in his career."

He added that marriage would also be helpful to Joan as it will give her child a father figure to look up to. But when Joan gave him answer he didn't quite expect and turned him down, he had to change his game plan. Still, he's clearly not all about Joan's best interests when it comes to going as far as marrying her.

"Well, he thinks that he knows what Joan wants. I believe that he's wrong. [Laughs]," Wolk said.

Mad Men midseason finale airs Sunday at 10/9c on AMC.
