Deathlok may be taking a break from Agents of SHIELD, but that doesn't mean the cyborg is gone for good.

Free from the controlling forces of Cybertek, HYDRA, and Agent Garrett (Bill Paxton), Mike Peterson (J. August Richards) will head off to atone for his recent deeds (see video below) while the ABC series enjoys its summer hiatus.

Well intentioned at heart, Deathlok is not prepared to live as the villain his creators imagined.

"I never ever saw my character as a bad guy or a villain," Richards explained at last weekend's Motor City Comic Con in Detroit, Mich., according to ABC. "I always saw him as a guy who was trying to be a hero for his son and he was going to do whatever he had to do to be a hero for his son and to just keep himself and his son alive. For me, he was always a gut with great intentions that were kind of exploited by others."

However, Agents of SHIELD's creators have yet to inform Richards what Deathlok's next move is. But don't worry, executive producer Jeffrey Bell is hoping to see the technological marvel back on TV screens soon.

"We love J., we loved Mike Peterson, so I hope we can find really fun and surprising ways to keep that character alive," Bell told TV Guide.

Find out more when Agents of SHIELD returns to ABC this fall on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
