"I hope [Tom returns]," said series creator Jon Bokenkamp, according to TV Guide. "Honestly, that's one thing that I'm not entirely sure how he will or may or could even weave into her life because it does feel like such a conclusion that this man entered her life, had a role to play and he's now gone. That said, I loved the character and I love Ryan. There's something really compelling about the stories that we've been able to tell with him. I'm hoping we can surprise ourselves with that."

Eggold, meanwhile, has hinted that season 2 will reveal the truth behind his covert surveillance of Liz. It remains to be seen whether or not Tom will have an active role in this explanation.

"A lot of [background information is] going to wait," Eggold explained to PopSugar. "I thought a lot of it was going to come at the end of this year, but a lot of it is going to be next year, in season two."
