Agents of SHIELD's tag team scientists will be in for a rocky start to season 2.

Is Fitz In Tahiti? Clark Gregg & Jed Whedon Hint At Engineer's Fate On 'Agents Of SHIELD'

The freshman run of the Marvel season concluded with a series of heartbreaking scenes between Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Gemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), and there will definitely be consequences for their actions when SHIELD returns next fall.

Willing to lay down his life for the woman he loved, Fitz did not expect Simmons to drag his unconscious body nearly 90 feet from the ocean floor during "Beginning of the End." If the British engineer were awake, he would have been even more surprised to find himself quickly under the care of Director Fury's (Samuel L. Jackson) medical team.

Unfortunately, neither of these events ensures that Fitz will walk away from his brush with death unscathed. It also does not confirm that Simmons has the same romantic feelings towards the FitzSimmons pairing as he does.

What is known for sure, however, is that Simmons will not be abandoning her partner, no matter what the circumstances.

"Let's just say, however she felt in the past now it doesn't matter because the stakes have changed and they're a lot higher for FitzSimmons' relationship," Henstridge told fans last weekend at Houston's Comicpalooza. "He is, and always will be, her main priority."

Viewers will have to wait until Agents of SHIELD returns to ABC this fall in order to see how the FitzSimmons story plays out.
