Netflix: Internet Video Surpass 1 Billion Hours
Netflix subscribers watched more than 1 billion hours of online video last month, the company said in a statement.
The entertainment company said in January that viewing in the final three months of 2011 totaled more than 2 billion hours.
Netflix is trying to get more of their customers viewing movies and television programs online via the Internet, as opposed to ordering DVD's. The move will save the company millions on mailing costs and prevent the company from investing in DVD's, a format that is expected to become obsolete over the coming years.
Netflix's streaming service is becoming increasingly more popular as of late due to its price of $8 per month to watch an unlimited amount of video without commercial interruptions. In comparison, the average cable-TV subscription costs around 10 times that and has advertising interruptions.
The company has 26.5 million worldwide subscribers to its streaming service, more than the 22.3 million TV subscribers at the leading cable provider, Comcast Corp.
Some of the most popular movies that are ready to stream on Netflix include; The Big Lebowski, Shutter Island, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish) and Breakfast at Tiffany's.
