In Red's (James Spader) search for Berlin, Fitch has the power to help get him the info he needs as long as Red has the power to keep his formidable acquaintance on his toes. As far as executive producer John Eisendrath is concerned, the Fitch/Red exchange could go on for several seasons.
"I think that the role Alan Alda plays is central to sort of the larger mythology of the series that is on going and that is not answered and finished by the end of season 1," Eisendrath explained during an episode of Beyond the Blacklist. "He will very much be a part of the show next year, if not in the coming years as well as one of the central forces out there in the world who are interacting with and in some ways opposed to Reddington."
