'Hannibal' Season 3: Why Did Belelia Du Maurier Fly Off With Hannibal? Bryan Fuller Explains Finale Departure [VIDEO]
Hannibal's Dr. Lecter is in the wind, as is Belelia Du Maurier. Where they are headed, and why, however, won't be revealed until season 3.
Luckily for fans, series creator Bryan Fuller has dropped a few hints as to what these answers are and how long viewers will have to wait to uncover them.
"[The dying stag scene] is the end of Season 2, and essentially, after credits, that scene on the airplane is the first scene of Season 3," Fuller told TV Line. "And the fun thing about the Season 3 opener is that we're going to get into the specifics of exactly why Bedelia is in that chair, how she came to be in that chair, how it was actually an intriguing, smart decision for her, as opposed to Hannibal Lecter hijacking her and kidnapping her. I think she is absolutely where she has chosen to be, and how she made that choice is the hinge of Episode 1, Season 3."
Where Was Abigail Hobbs? Bryan Fuller Explains Return Of Allegedly Dead Character On 'Hannibal'
Surprisingly, Du Maurier wasn't the writers' first choice to have on the plane with Hannibal. Instead, the original plan called for Abigail to fly off with the good doctor.
"But then we got into the story and the emotional content of Will's betrayal of Hannibal. Knowing Hannibal had worked very hard to create this alternate reality where Abigail lived, and where [all three] go on as a family in the shadow of horrible, horrible deeds, it felt like for Hannibal, after this betrayal, he would not be able to go on with Abigail," Fuller said.
Why he decided to bring Belelia on his next adventure, however, is still a mystery. Find out more when Hannibal returns to NBC in 2015.
