Penny Dreadful is halfway through it's first season, and was renewed today for a second season.

No 'CG Monsters' On Showtime's Penny Dreadful?

The Showtime Victorian-supernatural-drama follows a cast of dark, vivid characters including the iconic Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), along with newcomers Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett).

The program's new season will air in 2015 with ten full episodes, two more than the show's current run.

More Literary Characters to Come on Penny Dreadful?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series has done well with audiences, beating both Masters of Sex and Homeland in terms of viewership.

Penny Dreadful has also helped the network to develop a younger audience, drawing in more young folk than any other Showtime program since the serial-killer hit Dexter, which ended in September 2013.

On average, Penny Dreadful is getting 4.8 million viewers per week, which isn't half bad considering the show emerged from relative obscurity. A lot of new programs start out with promising numbers that soon begin to fall, but this dark drama is still going strong.

According to David Nevins, president of the network, the new series "has been an interesting combination of genre credibility...The question was, could we do a genre show that made sense on Showtime that had adult appeal and the psychological sophistication you expect from one of our premium dramas, but still satisfies drama audiences. John Logan has delivered on both."

Penny Dreadful's fifth episode of season one will air Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
