Penny Dreadful News: More Flashbacks Coming For Haunting Showtime Series, Exploring 'Space Between Life and Death?' [VIDEO]
The latest episode of Penny Dreadful, Closer Than Sisters, aired on Sunday, June 9. Answers regarding the fallout between Vanessa Ives (Evan Green) and Mina Murray were finally given.
The episode existed primarily in flashback, which was a technique used earlier in the season to tell of Victor Frankenstein's (Harry Treadaway) childhood and Caliban's (Rory Kinnear) start in the theatre. One of the overarching aspects of Penny Dreadful is its exploration of past sins and how those sins influence the present.
In a June 6 interview with The Wrap, actor Timothy Dalton, who portrays Mina's father, Sir Malcolm, discussed the themes of the show and what drew him to it. "It's about the spaces between life and death," he explained, adding of episode 5, "The entire episode works really well... we now know all these things that you don't know. But it adds depth to everything we've seen before."
More Literary Characters To Come On Showtime Series?
The idea of "adding depth" through flashback sequences seems to be working for Penny Dreadful, the series was renewed shortly after the Frankenstein episode, and so, will audiences have more installments of this nature to look forward to? Will Brona Croft and Ethan Chandler be afforded the same background?
Each character seems to have a particular connection with the past. Ives wishes to change it, Chandler wants nothing more than to run from it. And Frankenstein appears set on exploring it, taking a closer look at "the spaces between life and death."
Penny Dreadful airs on Showtime Sundays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
