Pitch Perfect 2 already has a lot of hype building. The sequel to the break-out a cappella hit will feature most of the original cast, along with newcomers like Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Enders Game). Creator and first-time director Elizabeth Banks (Walk of Shame, The Hunger Games) and her cast have been sharing production stills via social media for a few weeks now. Could all this enthusiasm lead to a third film?

Sequels happen all the time with popular films in Hollywood, but usually when a franchise picks up speed the movies don't stop there. The trilogy, which usually associated with big-budget action and adventure sagas like Star Trek and Star Wars, has recently made its way into comedy, most notably with The Hangover and its subsequent sequels.

Amid all of the selfies and off-camera laughs, Us Weekly recently reported that rehearsals for the sequel are going well and possibly even moving along ahead of schedule.

Can Pitch Perfect 2 Eclipse The Hit Original?

While some of the actresseses are already in their mid to late twenties, Hollywood has grown accustomed to high school and college students played by older performers. Shows like Gilmore Girls and Glee made a habit of "aging down" actors. If the popularity of Pitch Perfect 2 were to make way for a third film, it could easily retain a majority of the cast, or at least tweak the narrative to include older characters.

Pitch Perfect 2 is scheduled to hit theatres in May 2015.
