Carney discussed reading Oscar Wilde's classic novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, on which the character is based. He also spoke of how Showtime chose to drive the character in a different direction. Some of his character was even drawn upon based on his own person. It seems costume designers took his own style into account when looking for inspiration.
According to Dread Central, Carney learned a great deal from the character. "Different characters that you play have an opportunity to teach you something about your own life and to help you grow as a human," he explained. "So I try to come at it from that perspective, and I think of different lessons that Dorian has to teach me. One of them is fearlessness, being more fearless."
Carney confirmed that Dorian's portrait, which has been hinted at on the show but never shown from the front, will definitely be released through the course of the series. Construction of it has already begun, though Carney has not seen the image yet.
With two episodes left in the show's first season, Penny Dreadful continues on Showtime Sunday, June 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
