Despite fans' fears, Law and Order SVU creator Dick Wolf now says the show was never in danger of being canceled.

Why Law and Order SVU Season 15 Was Hardest Ever For Mariska Hargitay

In April, there were rumors that Wolf had been asked to take a pay cut for SVU to return to NBC, something Deadline at the time reported Wolf was "unwilling" to do. The original Law and Order went off the air after 20 seasons.

But, now Wolf is saying that report was false. Wolf told DigitalSpy that Law and Order: SVU was never "in crisis."

"There are negotiations every year," he said. "The show after 15 years is very expensive for an hour drama. So the network wanted it back, it was just a question of 'Can we afford to have it back?'"

The answer was yes and Law and Order SVU will be returning on September 24. The show is getting close to the 20 seasons the original Law and Order was able to stay on the air for. "That's five more years, which is daunting but possible," Wolf said about SVU reaching that milestone. "I must say that I think this last season of SVU was probably the best in 10 years."

Critics have applauded Season 15 as one of the best seasons ever for the hit program. "If we can keep doing that every year - if [showrunner] Warren Leight can keep up the marathon pace," Wolf said, "you never know what's possible. I'd love it to happen."
