'True Detective' Season 2 Cast: Only One Male Lead For New Episodes Of HBO Series, Contradicting Early Statement By Nic Pizzolatto [VIDEO]
HBO's True Detective quickly became one of the years most talked-about dramas with its breakout first season. With writing nearly completed and casting a tightly guarded secrets, fans have been speculating about the series' second season for months now. However, recently it has been suggested that even the limited information officially released by creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto might not be entirely truthful.
Friday The Wrap released a statement via Twitter regarding casting for the crime drama's new season. While it had originally been established that the program would take place in California with two male leads and one female lead, The Wrap suggested that Pizzolatto might have taken a different turn.
True Detective Season 2 Rumors
"Twitter EXCLU: The 1st script for 2nd season is IN," read The Wrap's post on Twitter Friday evening, "& agency sources tell us it features one MALE lead & male/female co-stars".
One lead can be a big risk in today's television, which has drawn heavily on ensemble performances for hits like HBO's Game of Thrones and the CBS legal drama The Good Wife. HBO is particularly known for ensemble performances with Big Love, True Blood, and Boardwalk Empire.
Framing a program around a central character is nothing new, but it is rare, and as shows like Showtime's Dexter have come to show, casting is key to making it work. If Pizzolatto does intend for there to be a single lead role on True Detective's second season, then casting has just become twice as crucial for setting the series up for a solid season.
True Detective returns to HBO in 2015.
