'Penny Dreadful' TV Show Spoilers: Creator John Logan Talks 'Humanity' On Showtime Series, Hints 'New Adventure' For Season 2 [VIDEO]
Showtime's Penny Dreadful finished out its first season on Sunday with plenty of blood, death, and existentialism to go around.
Penny Dreadful Season Finale Spoilers
Creator John Logan recently discussed his goals within the final episode (featured below), as well as how the series will move forward with the start of season two.
"At it's heart," explained Logan of the season finale, "it's really about Sir Malcolm and Vanessa coming together". This is precisely what happened on Sunday, when the ultimate sacrifice was made and Mina Harker's fate decided.
Penny Dreadful Is Changing The Face Of TV Horror
"The climax had to be two things," continued Logan, "It had to be putting all of the characters together, and finally, Sir Malcolm would have to make a choice. About life and death. About the undead and the real living. And he makes that choice."
The "choice" Logan referee to of course is Sir Malcolm's (Timothy Dalton) decision to save Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and, in doing so, puts a bullet through his daughter's heart. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), and Sembene (Danny Sapani) all bear witness to this moment, which is sure to set the stage for Sir Malcolm's acceptance of Miss Ives in the next season.
Logan made sure to keep things vague in discussing the series' second season, which airs next year. "Season one for me was about establishing the ground rules of the series," said Logan, "We introduce the characters, set them in motion, and really created our own little dysfunctional family."
"In season two, we get to send them on a new adventure," he added, "Continuing the themes of the first season, which is endlessly, what is it to be human."
With Ethan's werewolf orgins, Frankenstein's deception, and Miss Ives' return to religion, there will certainly be plenty of room for Logan to explore humanity within the supernatural realm of this Victorian drama.
Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
