The HBO criminal drama True Detective has developed a near-cult following in spite of that fact that it only premiered on television this year. With season two currently in the works and creator Nic Pizzolatto shooting down rumors left and right, fans continue to speculate about the future of the highly-anticipated series.

'True Detective' Season 2 Rumors

One of the sites dedicated to True Detective theories decided yesterday to re-launch a campaign in favor of Mad Men's Jon Hamm in the leading role of the drama's next season.

It seems that fans have suggested Hamm before, but the recent rumor that the show's upcoming season will only have one male lead instead of two male and one female, as Pizzolatto had claimed, brings talk of a new show dynamic. If the series intends for this season to function as less of an ensemble, then they will need an actor who can carry the weight of a leading role.

Hamm has already proven himself capable. He has the charisma, the commanding presence, and he has managed to serve as leading man Don Draper on seven seasons of AMC's Mad Men. With the ad agency drama finishing out its final season this January and filming already underway, it give just enough time for Hamm to run over to HBO for True Detective's new season.

Even with the overwhelming enthusiasm from fans, it is unlikely that outside support alone would land Hamm the role, even if he is interested. Nonetheless, online fan-bases have managed to move mountains in the entertainment industry, re-igniting interest in canceled shows like HBO's The Comeback and NBC's Heroes. Audiences have also played a part in getting film adaptations on the big screen.

True Detective returns top HBO for its second season January 2015.
