The "psycho-sexual" drama Penny Dreadful has been renewed for a second season on Showtime.

'Penny Dreadful' Creator John Logan Talks 'New Adventure' For Season 2

With all of the lead roles essentially alive (or close to it) at the end of the season finale June 29, it means that the eight primary actors should be returning next year.

But are all of them ready to commit?

'Penny Dreadful' Season Finale Spoilers

Actor Reeve Carney, who portrays the charismatic and age-defying Dorian Gray on the series, started out as a musician. He was a guitarist in the band Carney, who released their first album in 2010, and even starred in the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark in New York.

Then Carney was cast as the infamous Dorian Gray on the new Showtime series, which at the time only had a contract for the first season.

In an interview with Vulture back in June, writer Stuart Miller noted that Carney had originally intended to return to music after Spider-Man. "I love exploring different aspects of myself," explained Carney, "but I'd never want to replace music with acting... When I went to Dublin for Penny Dreadful, I set up equipment there so I could mix all the songs [for a solo album]... The album is now close to done".

So what drew Carney to Penny Dreadful?

"The script kind of came out of nowhere," explained the actor of the series, "But I was attracted to John Logan's writing. I found it intriguing. And I always like to do something that will challenge me".

With Carney's lasting intention to return to music, it's possible the actor's role could be downsized on the Showtime series. Carney does insist, however, that he has a strong work ethic and seems to commit to projects with fierce loyalty.

That being known, will he stay? Or will he go?

Penny Dreadful returns for season two on Showtime in 2015.
