HBO's hit prohibition series Boardwalk Empire has a tendency to be a bit of a boys club, but that hasn't stopped actress Kelly Macdonald (Brave, No Country For Old Men) from holding her own onscreen.

The 38 year-old Scotland native, who plays Margaret Thompson, appeared in season one as the meager and very pregnant Mrs. Schroeder. Abused by her husband and desperate to feed her children, Margaret turned to Nucky Thompson (Steven Buscemi) for help.

Five seasons later Margaret has gone from lover to wife to independent working woman. By the end of season four Margaret had managed to secure an apartment for her and her two children by making a deal to help out the infamous Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg).

Finally independent and free of financial fears, it seems Margaret has everything she needs, sparking debate as to whether the actress will be returning to the show this fall.

Fans noticed last season when Margaret's presence on the show grew scarce. She was hardly in the first few episodes. Though her prominence picked up towards the end of the season, could this be the beginning of a "phase out"?

As the only female lead on the series, her exit would hold a lot of weight. "She's out to help women and she's a good role model in her own way," explained Macdonald in a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, agreeing that she does view Margaret as a feminist.

"I think she's a bit rubbish in other ways," admitted the actress, "But mainly she's someone that's got aspirations and she wants to make her mark."

Will Margaret return to "make her mark"? Fans will just have to wait and see.

Boardwalk Empire returns to HBO September 2014.
