While fans and critics alike speculated that the first season of HBO's True Detective was bound to make an appearance at this years Emmy's, the nominations it received proved to be a little less expected.

Though considered an "anthology" series in The LA Times, HBO chose to enter True Detective as a drama series instead of under the miniseries category. The show managed to nab a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series and is the only new show featured in the category.

Most striking was the double nomination for the program under Outstanding Lead Actor in A Drama Series. Both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were nominated as leads, meaning that the show has a good chance of winning the category. Again, True Detective is the only new series nominated under the category.

Series Creator Nice Pizzolatto Gives True Detective Stars Homework

The criminal drama also scored writing and direction nominations. Under Outstanding Writing for A Drama Series is creator Nic Pizzolatto, who penned all eight episodes for the show and is nominated for episode The Secret Fate Of All Life

Cary Jo Fukunaga is nominated under Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series, having directed True Detective's first season in its entirety. He is nominated for Who Goes There.

McConaghey, Harrelson, and Fukunaga departing the series prior to its second season and this is the only time they will be at the Emmys for True Detective, though Fukunaga could return somewhere down the line.

As the drama's creator, Pizzolatto continues to write for the series, having recently penned the second season.

True Detective received a total of 12 Emmy nominations, with HBO's Game Of Thrones leading the race with 19 nominations.
