Penny Dreadful ended its first season on Showtime just last month, but already cast and crew are preparing to dive into the series' new, exciting season.

First, however, they will do a few interviews to promote the program during its "off-season," including a trip to Comic Con next week.

Recently, series creator John Logan sat down with Ad Week for a one-on-one talk about the Victorian drama, including his influences and the wait to bring this vision to life.

Logan admitted that he thought about the concept for about ten years before he actually mentioned it to anyone. "We were at Disneyland, and we were standing in line," explained Logan, referring to himself and one of his producing friends. "And I said, 'I have an idea for a TV show.' And as any writer will tell you, when you first say that out loud, it's a really treacherous moment."

In spite of Logan's fears, the concept quickly gained moments and soon became a reality.

"I just love monsters," explained Logan when asked about his decision to take the horror route, "I've always loved monsters… Growing up as a gay man, before it was as socially acceptable as it might be now, I knew what it was to feel different from other people, to have a secret and to be frightened of it…I think all the characters grapple with a version of that."

While Logan knew the story he wanted to tell and the characters he wanted to explore, he didn't necessarily have all the casting down right away. He did, however, know one casting decision before the scripts were even completed. Vanessa Ives was written for actress Eva Green. "She's sort of my muse," he said.

As far as season two goes, Logan intends to continue exploring different facets of the world he has created. "I look for ways to challenge them as both characters and actors," he admitted, "And I look for ways to satisfy them as both characters and actors."

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
