TCA Awards 2014 Winners: 'Breaking Bad', 'Veep' & More Win Big [VIDEO]
The Emmy Awards are happening later this summer, but a different television award event took place on Saturday night.
The Television Critics Association handed out their awards in a non-televised show hosted by actor Terry Crews. While this award show is no less subjective than any other one, the people making the decisions watch television for a living, so they know the subject well. It can also perhaps give folks a preview of what to expect when the Emmys do roll around. HitFix reported on Saturday about the event, and all the winners.
The big winner of the evening was Breaking Bad, which won Program of the Year, an award that pits dramas and comedies against one another. This was the final season of AMC's much loved drama, so it isn't surprising to see them go out with a win. However, even though Breaking Bad won Program of the Year, The Good Wife won Outstanding Achievement in Drama. Meanwile, Veep and Louie tied for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. Julie Louis-Dreyfus and Matthew McConaughey won the top major acting awards, with the former winning for Veep and the latter winning for True Detective, which also won for best miniseries.
The TCA Awards also had out career achievement awards every year. This year, James Burrows, who has directed episodes of most of the legendary sitcoms you've heard of, took home the award. Meanwhile, Saturday Night Live won the Heritage Award, which is essentially career achievement for a TV show. Both of these awards were well earned, if only for longevity. While the Emmys have more notoriety and are more visual, winning an award from people who criticize TV for a profession could perhaps be known as more of an achievement.
