'Gotham' TV Show News: Showrunner Discusses The 'Hope & Struggle' The Characters Go Through [VIDEO]
There is a mixture of reactions around FOX's upcoming show Gotham.
On the one hand, the story takes place in Batman's Gotham City, focusing on Ben McKenzie as a young Jim Gordon, and it is going to tell the origin stories of many iconic comic book, and movie, characters. On the other hand, it is essentially Batman without Batman, as Bruce Wayne is only a 13-year-old child in the show. Expectations, and concerns, are high, but the brain trust behind the show had a lot to say about it at a press tour event, which HitFix reported about on Sunday.
In particular, showrunner Bruno Heller had a lot to say about the show, acknowledging the concerns that have been voiced, and giving those interested further information about his vision for the world of Gotham. Heller discussed the notion of Batman without Batman thusly:
"That's the situation that the show is all about: how do you deal with crime at this level when there are no superheroes, and just ordinary mortal men and women trying to solve these issues," Heller said. "It's as much about the hope and struggle they are engaged in as waiting for savior. It's about men and women, and not about superheroes, and to me, that's a more interesting story."
This should give the curious a clear sense of what Heller and company intend this show to be.
There was also talk of the show going for a 70's film visual style, and a mixture of the modern and the classic. McKenzie evoked the concept of Greek tragedy in his responses. In essence, unless fans are really only interested in Batman beating people up and stopping colorful criminals, there should be something in Gotham for them.
