American Horror Story: Freak Show will be very different than previous seasons of the show, according to the president of FX.

FX president John Landgraf explained at the Television Critics Association press tour Monday that Freak Show, the fourth season of the series, would be a departure from previous season.

"It's really different every year," Landgraf said, explaining that creator Ryan Murphy is "really very detail-oriented . . . The characters are really distinctive, really original, some of them very strange."

The president also explained that Freak Show would have some of the darkness of Asylum, the show's second season, and the humor and camp of Coven, the most recent season.

American Horror Story: Freak Show is set in the 1950s and centered on one of the last remaining freak shows in America. Set in Jupiter, Fla., Jessica Lange's character owns a troupe of "freaks" that include characters played by Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett.

The season is also set to feature Denis O'Hare, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe and Jamie Brewer, though none of their characters are specifically known at this time. Michael Chiklis has also signed on for Freak Show and will be playing the ex-husband of Bates' character, the father of Peters' character and the current husband of Bassett's character.

American Horror Story: Freak Show is slated to debut in October on FX, though the network has not yet announced a specific air date.
