Series creator John Logan and star Josh Hartnett talked a little about Penny Dreadful's kindhearted, occasionally monstrous Ethan Chandler at Comic Con in San Diego on Friday, suggesting that there's a lot more to come the character during the drama's second season on Showtime.

Actor Josh Hartnett Teases New 'Surprises' For Upcoming 'Penny Dreadful' Episodes

"What I think this show is about is the monster in all of us," explained Logan during the Penny Dreadful Comic Con panel (featured below). He said that he knew Chandler was always going to be a werewolf, joking that it was one of the first things he told the actor. "I'm glad you read the script. You're a werewolf," laughed Logan during the panel, though he refused to say how exactly Chandler became a werewolf, whether he was born or made in this way.

While Hartnett admitted that the cast has yet to receive the scripts for Season 2, he did elaborate on where he'd like to see his character go in the future. "He had a lot of compassion…" explained the actor of Chandler. "Particular empathy for women in this world…it kind of shows that Ethan may have been hurt in some way specifically earlier on in his life."

Hartnett added that that sort of pain often manifests with a "physical reaction," which is played out on a heightened scale for Chandler.

Logan has expressed interest in shooting more flashback episodes as the series continues. Season 1 already had a complete flashback episode for Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and so it seems that the mysterious Ethan Chandler could be a prime candidate for such for such a development.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
