It seems like Hollywood is having universe fever and the latest one to get the bug is Universal with their collection of classic movie monsters. But with a reboot of The Mummy planned, have they found the guy to run the beginning of the monster universe?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Star Trek and Transformers writer Alex Kurtzman is set to direct the reboot of The Mummy. He was already set to produce the picture with Chris Morgan and worked on the script with former writing partner Roberto Orci.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, it's understood that the new Mummy is set in the present and is not a horror play but rather an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements. It also will feature new characters and not rehash previous incarnations.

Jon Spaihts worked on the script with Kurtzman and Orci. Sean Daniel is also a producer on the project. Bobby Cohen is executive producer.

The project has already gone through a couple of directors, Len Wiseman and Andy Muschietti, but that was before Universal began implementing its master monster plan.

It seems like with Kurtzman at the helm, Universal is going to use The Mummy to gauge the interest in this monster universe they are creating. Kurtzman is also set to direct Venom for Sony's Spider-Man universe.

Kurtzman made his directorial debut with the drama People Like Us, which starred Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks, so Mummy would mark a significant leap in terms of budget and scope.

The Mummy is set to open in theaters on April 22, 2016.
