Orange is the New Black standout Natasha Lyonne has an intriguing new preview for the third season of the Netflix prison comedy-drama.
Alex Will 'Know Why' Piper Orchestrated Her Return Back To Prison
Lyonne, who plays the quick-witted Nicky Nichols on Orange is the New Black, spoke to People this week about the third season and revealed how her background informs her performance.
Teasing Season 3, she simply said:
"In three words: So much bloodshed."
Orange is the New Black's Nicky Gets Flashback Episode In Season 3
There has actually been very little bloodshed on the series thus far, aside from big moments like Piper (Taylor Schilling) beating up Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) in the Season 1 finale. This could mean that fans will be getting more fights in the prison.
Lyonne has had a troubled past with drug use and she uses her past experience in order to play Nicky, who herself deals with drug addiction throughout the series.
"Believe me, there's no shortage of things for me to draw on when it comes to Nicky's backstory," she revealed. "But while I was filming a hospital scene [when Nicky undergoes open heart surgery after an overdose] it was weird because I had been through something so similar, but had almost nothing to draw on. I had my surgery for the same reason, as a result of drug use. But Nicky's feeling was 'God, I'm still not dead yet?' For me, I had already been doing a pretty decent job of clean living before the procedure. I was like, 'Gosh, I really hope this doesn't take me out.' I'm grateful I'm okay."
Lyonne's performance was a hit with Emmy voters, who awarded her with a nomination in early July in the Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category. She is nominated against two of her co-stars, Uzo Aduba (Suzanne) and Laverne Cox (Sophia).
Orange is the New Black Season 3 is expected to being streaming in Summer 2015 on Netflix. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available for streaming on the site.
