Marvel News: Kevin Feige Says Timing Is Key For Female Superhero Movie, Will It happen Anytime Soon? [VIDEO]
Despite the weekend success of Guardians of the Galaxy, which includes a female hero and villain, and two movies featuring Scarlett Johansson as sidekick Black Widow, Marvel seems to be still non-committal about making a female-led superhero movie. But according to their head chief, it all depends on timing.
Is A Female Thor, Black Captain America Movie Coming Soon From Marvel?
Speaking with Comic Book Resource published on Saturday, Marvel's Kevin Feige said that there have been discussion on a female-led superhero movie, like Black Widow, but it is all dependent on timing.
"I think it comes down to timing, which is what I've sort of always said, and it comes down to us being able to tell the right story. I very much believe in doing it," Feige said.

"I very much believe that it's unfair to say, 'People don't want to see movies with female heroes,' then list five movies that were not very good, therefore, people didn't go to the movies because they weren't good movies, versus [because] they were female leads. And they don't mention Hunger Games, Frozen, Divergent. You can go back to Kill Bill or Aliens. These are all female-led movies. It can certainly be done."
Two of the films listed, Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen, were two of the highest grossing films from last year and the latter was from parent company Disney. Feige goes on to say that while the public is crying for a female-centered movie, there are no immediate plans for one.
"I hope we do it sooner rather than later. But we find ourselves in the very strange position of managing more franchises than most people have," Feige said.
"But it does mean you have to put one franchise on hold for three or four years in order to introduce a new one? I don't know. Those are the kinds of chess matches we're playing right now."
While Marvel does have a lot of potential franchises being built right now like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, they also have more than enough dates set until 2019 where they can slide in at least one female superhero movie.
Black Widow has done well in Iron Man 2, The Avengers, and Captain America: Winter Soldier and if they wanted little risk, they could go with a solo film for her first. Johansson did a solid job selling Lucy this summer and a return with the Marvel logo attached could be just as good.
Marvel has taken their risks with some properties, but according to these comments by Feige, it looks like a female superhero movie will be their biggest one.
