Many of the actors rumored to be associated with the upcoming season of HBO's True Detective are big name stars.

One of the possibly lesser known contenders is Taylor Kitsch, who made a name for himself on NBC's Friday Night Lights, but the actors resume is hardly consistent. He's starred in a number of big budget flops, though his recent performances in the 2013 war film Lone Survivor and the 2014 critically acclaimed HBO film The Normal Heart suggest he has it in him to rise through the ranks.

According to True Detective Rumors on Wednesday, landing a role on True Detective could be a career defining move for the 33-year-old actor, elevating him even to a big name for dramatic roles.

'True Detective' Casting Rumors For Season 2 Continue To Soar

Talk of Kitsch joining the HBO program's cast first emerged July 11 when E! reported that Kitsch and Colin Farrell (Minority Report, Saving Mr. Banks) were under consideration for two of the leading roles.

Early rumors tied Jessica Chastain (The Debt, Mama), Christian Bale (The Prestige, The Dark Knight), Josh Bolin (No Country For Old Men) and Brad Pitt (12 Years A Slave) to the crime drama. Some even thought Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) or Jon Hamm (Mad Men) could possibly turn up on the series, though all of these reports ultimately turned out to be false when series creator Nic Pizzolatto denied that any casting decisions had been made as of June.

Pizzolatto has yet to confirm or deny Kitsch's involvement with the show.

True Detective returns to HBO for a second season in 2015.
