The foundation is down, and The Blacklist will leap into season 2 at top speed.

What Is Liz Keen's Future? 'The Blacklist' Looks Back At The Past For Answers

The NBC series ended its freshman season with more questions than answers, but actor James Spader (Raymond 'Red' Reddington) believes these mysteries will propel The Blacklist into intriguing new territory.

"People will see this season is different because we're able to play with things that make a better show, like story and character," Spader informed Playboy (via The Daily Mail). "We're not building a foundation anymore, which is what we spent last year doing. There are a lot of changes."

Red's enigmatic past and present, however, is one piece of the series' hit formula that definitely won't change. As far as Spader is concerned, giving away too much information would bring the story crashing down.

"I believe with all my heart that the best way to ruin this character is to tell too much about who and what he is," Spader said, according to The Daily Mail. 'Part of that is a mystery. Just when you think you're getting comfortable, do not get comfortable. Just when you think you have him figured out and you know what the boundaries and safe places are, you're not safe. It's never safe."
