The Eleventh Doctor (Smith) placed a finale phone call before he transformed into Peter Capaldi's Twelve, and it was to the present-day Clara (Jenna Louise Coleman). Looking out for both his companion and his future self, Eleven shocked fans with his sudden reappearance.

"It just felt utterly right for what we were planning for Peter's Doctor - and right for Matt's Doctor that he would think of that as he was just about ready to go out the door," said showrunner Steven Moffat, according to the Radio Times. "And you think, well it's never been done before - why not?"

If viewers are concerned about the logistics of the Doctor's call, Moffat seems confident that it can just be passed of as another quirk of time travel.

"I did wonder. I wondered when we sat in the cutting room, 'Does this seem strange?'" Moffat told the Radio Time. "And then you remember you're making Doctor Who and you go, 'Yes this does seem strange - that's absolutely fine!'"
