The Amanda Knox murder trial has become one of the most sensationalized and oft-debated cases of all-time, and now a movie version loosely based off the events of the murder trial is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film, which follows a U.S. foreign correspondent living in Italy as she and a documentary filmmaker try to uncover the mystery. It is a fictional story that is loosely based on the Knox case-a U.S. student is accused of killing her roommate while living abroad in Italy, and was inspired by the book of the same name, which recounts a fictionalized version of events that took place before and during Knox's murder trial.

The movie stars Kate Beckinsale in the role of journalist Simone Ford and Daniel Bruhl as Thomas, the documentarian. It also stars Cara Delevingne, Rosie Fellner, Genevieve Gaunt and Sai Bennett.

Though the movie is fiction, it does have several parallels to the famous Knox case, which has been closely followed since the murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercher in their shared villa in Perugia, Italy in 2007. Knox was arrested in connection to the murder, alongside her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and a drifter, Rudy Guede.

Guede was fast-tracked at his trial and is serving a 16-year prison sentence. Knox and Sollecito both maintained their innocence, but were convicted of the murder. However, they were released on appeals in 2011. Sollecito remained in Italy, while Knox returned to the U.S. However, the pair were reconvicted earlier this year, and are preparing for their final appeals either later this year or early next year. If their re-convictions are upheld, Sollecito will begin serving a 26-year sentence. Knox will begin serving a 28 ½-year sentence if she is extradited to Italy.
