'Power Rangers' Movie Rumors: Cast Could Be More Unknowns Than Big Names, Be Closer To 'Star Trek' Than 'Transformers' For Orci [VIDEO]
With the script underway for the reboot of Power Rangers, casting has been on the mind of many fans with crazy names being thrown out about some of the main characters, but could executive producer Roberto Orci follow another movie of his and cast unknowns in the lead roles?
Former Black Ranger Teases Cameo In 'Power Rangers' Reboot
While no casting has been taking place there are rumors of a casting call for extras and lead roles taking place in Los Angeles recently, which could mean Orci is trying to make this movie more in line with Star Trek, which featured relative unknowns like Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the lead rather than casting big names in the franchise.
The choice worked out for Star Trek as the movie made stars out of Pine and Quinto, who have since moved on to other franchises. But it would also save the studio some money when it comes to bringing in monster talent.
What Could The Plot Be For The 'Power Rangers' Reboot?
Rumored names have included Liam Hemsworth, Chloe Grace Moretz and Taylor Lautner for big roles and while they aren't A-list stars, they are still in much more demand than having someone come into the role through a casting call. It is a technique that has work for director J.J. Abrams in Star Trek and now Star Wars: Episode VII.
Abrams worked with Orci on multiple projects including the reboot of the sci-fi television series.
There is still room for the franchise to bring in a Hemsworth or Lautner, but the cast could be mainly unknown and try to create stars with the new franchise rather than try and copy and paste actors from already successful series.
Power Rangers is set to hit theaters on July 22, 2016.
