It is set to premiere in the coming week at the New York Film Festival, but the latest film from director David Fincher was shown for select critics early, and garnered a lot of praise both for the film and the actors involved.

Batman To Display Similar Rage As Actor Who Plays Him In 'Dawn Of Justice'

Coming from the acclaimed, best-selling book by Gillian Flynn, on the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick's portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble.

Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

According to Variety's Justin Chang, "this taut yet expansive psychological thriller represents an exceptional pairing of filmmaker and material, fully expressing Fincher's cynicism about the information age and his abiding fascination with the terror and violence lurking beneath the surfaces of contemporary American life."

Time Out's Joshua Rothkopf added that Gone Girl works as one of the stealthiest comedies since American Psycho, adding that "it's a hypnotically perverse film, one that redeems your faith in studio smarts (but not, alas, in local law enforcement, tabloid crime reporting or, indeed, marriage)." While enjoying it, The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy said that "Gillian Flynn's twisty, nasty and sensational best-seller, is a sharply made, perfectly cast and unfailingly absorbing melodrama." he said.

"But, like the director's adaptation of another publishing phenomenon, 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' three years ago, it leaves you with a quietly lingering feeling of: "Is that all there is?"

With many believing this film will be a major Oscar contender, it is assuring with the initial reviews that Fincher strikes gold again. Many added that leads Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike shine in their respective roles as the main two characters.

Gone Girl is set to open in theaters on October 3.
