'South Park' Season 18 Premiere: Washington Redskins Controversy Addressed in Satire With Cartman [WATCH VIDEO]
South Park's latest season premiered this week and to no surprise it comically weighed in on popular news topics. The season 18 premiere on Wednesday focused on the big controversy behind the name of the NFL's Washington Redskins.
During the episode, Eric Cartman and the gang dropped out of school to start a company and were looking for good name. Cartman decided on "Washington Redskins" since the name isn't trademarked by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This year, the office cancelled the team's trademark because it finds it offensive to Native Americans.
However, the team's owner, Dan Snyder, wasn't happy with the South Park boys and confronted them.
"In the name of decency, I am asking that you please stop using the name Washington Redskins to refer to your company," he said. "Don't you see that when call your organization the Washington Redskins it's offensive to us?"
Cartman defended his decision by saying, "I have total respect for you. When I named my company Washington Redskins it was out of deep appreciation for your team and your people."
The NFL team has faced a lot of controversy regarding its name, which references Native Americans. The team's symbol is also the face of a Native American, which many have deemed racist and offensive. However, the team's owner addressed the issue in an open letter and made it clear he won't change the team's name.
"The name of my team continues to hold the memories and meaning of where we came from, who we are, and who we want to be in years to come. It is a symbol of everything I stand for. When I think of the name, I think of the values (and assets) I want to share with the next generation," Snyder wrote last year.
