'Gotham' TV Show News: Oswald Cobblepot Goes To Surprising Lengths To Gain Power While 'Indebted' To Jim Gordon [VIDEO]
One of the breakout stars of Fox's Gotham recently talked about his villainous character and previewed what's ahead for him.

Robin Lord Taylor, who plays Oswald Cobblepot (eventually The Penguin) in the series, spoke with TVLine about his character's rise to power, his complicated relationship with Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and his even more complicated relationship with his mother (Carol Kane).
"He's immediately learning how to play people off of other people," Taylor said, discussing his ascension to power. "His fearlessness in terms of achieving what he wants - which is to run Gotham City - and the lengths to which he goes will surprise people."

Taylor said that his favorite relationship on the series is between Oswald and Jim Gordon, particularly after the scene at the end of the premiere episode, which features Gordon ultimately sparing his life by letting him go into the ocean.
"Penguin is completely indebted to him. However at the same time, they're rivals," Taylor explained. "They're ultimate goals, good and evil, are disparate, but at the same time they need each other."
While Oswald is not exactly trusting of the various cops and criminals in Gotham City, the one person he does trust is his mother, Gertrud Kapelput, who will be introduced in Episode 2.
"For a person like Oswald, who is somewhat depraved, to trust and love anyone... there has to be something a little sadistic going on there," Taylor teased, before alluding to their relationship potentially being like Norman Bates and his mother Norma from the horror classic Psycho.
Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
