Hannibal will delve into Dr. Lecter's past in season 3, but some areas of the good doctor's development will be left a mystery.

Season 3 will pickup nearly a years after the bloody events of "Mizumono." With Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) and Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) esconded in Italy, viewers will get a peek into the villains past as his aunt, Lady Murasaki, enters the story.

"We are absolutely delving into his history" Sais series creator Bryan Fuller, according to Metro. "Not as many flashbacks as much as it is finding present day survivors from that era of his life and understanding, with greater detail, about Hannibal and his modes of human interaction."

However, Mikkelsen believes there is still such a mystery around how Hannibal became the monster he is today, and it is for that reason he can play him as Satan.

"I'm not a shrink myself, but what I know about human beings is that he doesn't fit the bill at all," Mikkelsen said at Monster Mania over the summer. "He's something else. He sees beauty where the rest of us see horror, and he doesn't have a background story that tells us, 'oh, for that reason I am this and that's why I'm doing this.' He is a fallen angel."
