Showtime released the first trailer for the second season of Penny Dreadful on Sunday, cramming plenty of mystery into a vague 30-second promo.

Victor Frankenstein Might Have A 'Disturbing' New Creation On 'Penny Dreadful'

During the teaser (featured below), blood seeps through yellowed parchment as Miss Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) asks: "Do you believe the past can return?"

"More than that," replies the quiet Sembene (Danny Sapani) as blood continues to crawl across the page. "It never leaves us. It's who we are."

With that the image of a scorpion emerges in dark, vivid red strokes of blood.

"God help us then," says Miss Ives before the title of the series comes across the screen, along with a message that the Victorian supernatural drama will return in 2015.

The scorpion harkens back to the necklace Vanessa Ives wore in the initial poster for Season 1, which featured the creature predominantly as a pendant. The scorpion also represents "The Lovers" on her tarot card deck, suggesting that this season will rely more heavily on the creature which looks to make Miss Ives its bride. Such an occurrence would make her the mother of evil and lead to the destruction of all mankind.

This teaser might also be leading to more of a fleshed-out storyline for Sir Malcolm's (Timothy Dalton) companion Sembene, the only leading character from season one to not have had his own storyline.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second, longer season in 2015.
