With the Monday announcement that the first season of Fox's Gotham has been picked up for a full 22 episodes, more characters are surely on the way.

Gotham will have plenty of characters to explore now that they have 22 episodes for Season 1. Fox announced Monday that they were picking up the series for six more episodes, extending the original 16 episode order. Dana Walden and Gary Newman, the Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group made the announcement on Monday, praising the show's executive producers, Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon.

"Gotham debuted as one of the most buzzed-about shows of the fall, and with good reason. Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon have created an incredibly rich world, with characters that draw you in and a cast that brings to life these heroes and villains in a way we've never seen before," Walden and Newman said. "We are so excited to see where Bruno, Danny and the entire Gotham team take this story over the course of this season, and so thankful to all the fans who have embraced it this fall."

As expected, the series will continue to bring in new characters to Gotham City, including many villains. Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred Pennyworth on the series, joined Cannon in an interview with IGN in which they preview characters still set to come.

Dr. Leslie Thompkins is headed to the series soon, as Cannon teased in the interview. Thompkins is featured in the comics as an old friend of Bruce Wayne's father Thomas. She acts as a bit of a surrogate mother for Bruce.

"Jim Gordon [Ben McKenzie] gets to meet her through strange circumstances, when he is..." Cannon said, before presumably realizing that he could not say anymore. He then simply added, "At a very tough time in Jim's life, he will meet Leslie Thompkins."

Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
