Word that LuPone had signed on for the Victorian supernatural drama first emerged in September.

According to Variety on Sept. 8, a vague description of LuPone's character has her tied to the mysterious dark, and possibly even deadly nature of Miss Vanessa Ives (Eva Green). Whether this new character's relationship with Miss Ives will be for the greater good or the rise of evil, no one's saying. She will, however, play a significant role in the coming events for Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and company.

LuPone will be joined by a few other new faces this season, including Douglas Hodge, Jonny Beauchamp, and newcomer Sarah Greene. In addition, the program is also getting a boost from eight episodes to 10, giving creator John Logan plenty of room to explore all of the characters both old and new.

During the second half of the drama's first season, Miss Ives struggled with her susceptibility to demonic possession. The finale revealed that there is a creature looking to make her his bride specifically for the darkness within her, which will cause as much internal conflict as it will bloodshed.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for its second season in 2015.
